 Pong
Dam, about 80km away, offers a spectacular
view of the mighty Dhauladar Range.
The reservoir formed at the dam is about
84 square kilometers, and a mecca for
migratory birds. More than 220 bird
species belonging to 54 families have
been identified so far. Pong dam also
offers a number of water sports such
as parasailing and jet skiing. |

 Dalhousie,
at about 6400ft, is a hill station setup
by the British East India Company in
1854 as a retreat for its troops and
bureaucrats. It still maintains an ambience
of that period with its well maintained
churches and numerous old bungalows.
Dalhousie is about 210km from Hoshiarpur.

 Just
20km from Dalhousie is the "Switzerland
of India", Khajjiar. A stunning
grassy valley with a spring in the middle
that is set amongst tall deodars. Khajjiar
is certainly worth visting, should your
journey take you towards the beautiful
mountains of Himachal. |

 Dharamsala,
86 km from Hoshiarpur is the capital
of the Tibetan Government in Exile.
The headquarters are located about 10km
uphill of the main city in McLeod Ganj,
or Little Lhasa. Known for its significant
Tibetan community, McLeod Ganj is the
current home of the 14th Dalai Lama.
There is much to do in McLeod Ganj,
particularly for those interested in
enjoying a calming getaway in a serene
location surrounded spiritual people.
One may go to any number of monasteries
to meditate, or join short courses a
wide range of subjects from reiki to
Indian and Tibetan cooking to Thai massage
to a variety of yoga styles. Of particular
interest though, are attending the public
lectures by the Dalai Lama and getting
a chance to meet him, for many, a life
enriching experience.
For those into the outdoors, McLeod
Ganj offers a number of beautiful hikes
to locations such as Triund, Kareri
and Bhagsu Falls.
